Gentry and Levias Moving on to Division I
Two Central Wyoming College men's basketball players will be moving on to the NCAA Division I level for the 2021-2022 season. Jaylon Gentry, a two-year starter for the Rustlers, will be joining the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State. A'Jahni Levias, a one-year all-region performer for the Rustlers, has signed with the University of North Dakota.
Gentry comes to the Jackrabbits program after starting every game over the course of his two seasons at CWC. As a freshman, Gentry led CWC to a 20-11 record while averaging 9.9 PPG and 2.2 APG. His sophomore campaign saw huge gains with his individual numbers; averaging 16.3 PPG and 3.3 APG. "Gentry embodied what it means to be part of the RustlerSquad. He was a leader on the court, in the classroom, and around campus. His work ethic, passion for hoops, and overall toughness will lead to success at the 4-year level. I look forward to following his career at SDSU," commented Coach Schmit.
When asked about his time at CWC and accomplishing his goal of being a DI player, Gentry had this to say, "Joining SDSU has been a life-changing experience for me. The program is a family environment built with a great culture. The opportunities and experience competing at this level mean everything to me. My time at CWC was great. I was able to become the person I am today because of Coach Schmit and the program. CWC will always be home and I'll be a Rustler for life."
Levias will make his way to Grand Forks, ND to become a Fighting Hawk at the University of North Dakota. Levias had one of the best individual seasons ever for a CWC men's basketball player. Being named second-team All-Region IX after averaging 17.6 PPG and 8.3 RPG. A'Jahni commented on his one season at CWC, "My year at CWC was a memorable stepping stone in my life. I enjoyed every part of it, from hooping to building relationships with Coach Schmit, Coach Harrison, and my teammates. Signing to an NCAA Division I school was my goal coming to CWC and I accomplished it by signing with UND. I cannot wait to get started!"
Levias will be joining a former Rustler at UND, as Coach Jamie Stevens, former coach at CWC is now an assistant on staff for North Dakota. "I was fortunate to have coached A'Jahni for one season. The kid is a special talent on the court and will have an opportunity to impact the UND program in his first season on campus. Having him with a coaching staff I am familiar with is also a nice perk for tracking his progress and success," quoted Coach Schmit.
